Accounting Internship Program Overview


This Accounting Internship is a structured educational training program designed to provide guided exposure to nonprofit accounting practices, financial controls, and compliance requirements. The internship emphasizes learning, mentorship, and professional skill development while allowing the intern to participate in supervised, real-world accounting workflows.

Interns participate as trainees, not employees. All activities are conducted with training, supervision, and review, and are intended to build transferable skills applicable to careers in nonprofit finance, accounting, and business administration.

This internship does not constitute employment with Binaytara and is not designed as a pathway to employment with the organization.


Learning Focus Areas

Through mentored participation, the Accounting Intern will gain exposure to:

  • Nonprofit accounting systems and month-end close processes
  • Revenue recognition related to conferences, grants, and sponsorships
  • Expense documentation and verification practices
  • Grant and donor fund tracking (restricted vs. unrestricted)
  • Internal controls, accuracy checks, and audit concepts
  • Confidentiality and ethical handling of financial data

Educational & Project-Based Activities


All activities are conducted with training, guidance, and review. Interns do not hold independent authority over financial records, approvals, or reporting.

Revenue & Event Accounting Exposure

With training and supervision, the intern will:

  • Assist with month-end revenue review by verifying conference-related payments using tools such as Cvent, QuickBooks, and bank records
  • Learn how attendee and exhibitor payments are reconciled across systems
  • Observe how revenue discrepancies are identified and resolved

Learning focus: revenue recognition, reconciliation, and internal controls


Grant & Sponsorship Tracking Exposure

With mentor guidance, the intern will:

  • Assist in reviewing and organizing records related to IME grants, career awards, and sponsorships
  • Learn how registration payments and grant funds are tracked for accuracy
  • Observe how grant-related financial requirements differ from general revenue

Expense Verification & Documentation

As part of learning nonprofit expense management, the intern may:

  • Assist in collecting and organizing travel, lodging, and shipping invoices
  • Upload documentation into shared systems under staff direction
  • Learn how expense documentation supports audits and reporting

Internal Review & Accuracy Checks

With supervision, the intern will:

  • Practice identifying duplicate charges or inconsistencies in financial records
  • Flag potential issues for staff review and reconciliation
  • Learn how internal reviews support financial integrity

Payroll & Budget Exposure

For learning purposes, the intern may:

  • Assist in reviewing payroll-related spreadsheets for accuracy under supervision
  • Learn how payroll, PTO, and benefits align with departmental budgets
  • Observe how payroll data is reviewed without holding approval authority

Nonprofit Fund Management Exposure

With guidance, the intern will:

  • Assist in recording pledges and donations for learning purposes
  • Learn the distinction between restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Observe how fund usage is tracked and reported

Data Organization & Confidentiality

Throughout the internship, the intern will:

  • Practice maintaining confidentiality of donor and payroll information
  • Learn best practices for organizing financial records in shared databases
  • Understand ethical responsibilities in handling sensitive financial data

As the intern develops skills and understanding, the complexity of learning activities may increase, always remaining supervised and instructional in nature. Progression reflects educational growth and does not imply independent responsibility or staff-level authority.


Development Goals & Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to:

  • Understand how month-end close processes integrate revenue, expenses, and grants
  • Demonstrate improved proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks through guided exercises
  • Explain basic nonprofit accounting concepts, including grant budgeting and fund restrictions
  • Articulate the role of internal controls and documentation in financial compliance


Qualifications

  • Recent graduate in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
  • Willingness to learn and receive feedback in a structured learning environment
